Mary Gorman Quintenz's Obituary
Mary Gorman Quintenz 96, of Decatur died Tuesday February 22, 2005 in her home with her family at her side.
She was born November 10, 1908 in Christian County, IL to Anna Molohon and John Gorman. The oldest of ten children, she grew up on her family’s farm. She attended Sacred Heart Academy where she studied both piano and cello. She received the Silver Cross for excellence in music.
When Mary moved to Decatur, she was employed as a bookkeeper and continued to work in that field until her retirement at age 70.
She married Otto Quintenz, in 1941. They moved to the Forsyth area, where they raised three children. After the death of her husband, Mary moved into Decatur where she was an active member of Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and a volunteer with a number of service groups in her community.
Mary was a skilled and creative seamstress. She also crocheted many afghans and it was her great pleasure to give them as gifts to members of her immediate and extended family.
Throughout her life, Mary remained knowledgeable about national and international events and voted in every election including the 2004 election. She was a great sports fan and rarely missed watching a Chicago Cub’s game.
Mary will be remembered for her devotion to her family and her church, her generosity to others and her incredible determination to keep moving forward.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto, her parents, and all nine of her siblings. She is survived by her children, Sharon Quintenz John Van Pelt, Suzanne Huber Joe and Joe Quintenz Adelle, her grandchildren Otto, Sarah, Amanda, Margo and Paul and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 am Friday February 25, 2005 in Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, where Father James O’Shea will celebrate. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 5:30pm. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Catholic Medical Missions or Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
