I will miss my cousin, Matt, very much! You touched many people's lives in ways unimaginable. Even while my family is living in Alaska, we heard stories about Matt helping Alaskans in the middle of the night at Chicago's O'Hare Airport. Our dentist, Arnie Piehl, who lives in Ketchikan, Alaska, walked up to an airline ticket counter in early April several years ago trying to get to Cleveland, Ohio in a freak snowstorm for Major League Baseball's opening day at Cleveland Indians and who is working there at 12:30 a.m.?? Matt York! Matt asks Arnie for his ticket. Sees he is from Ketchikan and says I have a cousin who lives in Ketchikan with his wife. My dentist replies, "Oh, who is your cousin? I may know them!" Matt replies, Stan McCoy and his wife Kara. Arnie replies, "I am their dentist." I heard this story from Matt after my dentist relayed this story to me when we bumped into each other at the Ketchikan Airport Ferry. I was picking up Kara when Arnie was dropping someone off. Matt provided my dentist with hotel coupons for that night, changed his ticket for no extra charge and impressed Arnie with great customer service. That's how I remember my cousin! Always willing to help someone out in times of need! You always came to visit us at my parents house when we traveled back from Alaska!! May you rest in peace and be at ease! My sincere condolences to my Aunt Shirley, Uncle Ray, Cousin Mitch, Kathy, Paige, Caleb and all of your little ones running around. Matt was a great uncle and friend to many!! Matt's birthday is the day after our wedding anniversary, so I will always remember Matt's birthday. We were only two months different in age!
