Mattie Bell Towles' Obituary
Mattie Bell (Robertson) Towles departed this life on Friday, September 27, 2019 at the Brookdale Senior Living Facility in Cincinnati, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Rosie (Tisdale) Robertson; three brothers, H.C., Lee Arthur, and Silas; and a sister, Anna.
Mattie was born on June 14, 1934 in Somerville, TN. She married the late Mayo Towles on February 7, 1954. She was baptized into Christ at the Klondike Church of Christ in Memphis, TN.
From 1962 until 1968 Mayo and Mattie ministered at the Church of Christ in Water Valley, Mississippi, driving the 160 miles round-trip from Memphis every Sunday.
In 1968, she and Mayo accepted a preaching position at the East North Street Church of Christ in Decatur, IL, which became the Jasper Street Church of Christ. Mattie was a member of the Ladies Fellowship Group, the Jasper Street Singers, and the Illinois Chapter of the Bowser Women of Southwestern Christian College. In all, Mayo and Mattie worked together in ministry for over 50 years.
Mattie leaves to cherish her memory: sons William (Carmella) Towles of Cincinnati, OH and Kenneth (Barbara) Shaw of Memphis, TN; god-daughter Elaine (Keith) Brodnax of Memphis, TN; grandchildren Keith Andre Smith of Beverly, NJ, Christina Lynn Towles of Oak Park, IL, and Jeffrey Alan Towles of Cincinnati, OH; great-grandchildren Amir Malik Samos, Xavier Amaru Calip, and Jenesis Christine Towles.
Visitation will be at the Jasper Street Church of Christ Saturday, October 12, 2019, from 9 AM – 11 AM. Funeral services will follow immediately at 11 AM. Interment will be at Macon County Memorial Park following the services.
