Melvin Rawls' Obituary
On Sunday, November 10, 2003 another chapter in the book of life was closed. For on that day, Melvin Rawls, the oldest child of the late B.J. Rawls Sr. and the late Iona Conner Rawls Currie left this life with faith that a better one was to come. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying. Neither shall there be no more pain." Rev. 21:4
Homegoing services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 15, 2003 in Jasper Street Church of Christ, Brother Mayo Towles officiating. Melvin Rawls was born on March 12, 1936 in Haywood County, Brownsville TN., where he also received his education. He became a Christian at an early age and began his work in Christ's Kingdom, at Snipes Grove Baptist Church in Brownsville, TN. After moving to Decatur in 1955, Melvin was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Yvonne Philips. To this union three children were born. Shawn, Melvin Jr., and Troy. While seeking the spiritual guidance that was necessary for Mr. Rawls to care for himself and his children, he united with the Church of Christ where he was readily adopted into the church family. Melvin answered his calling by committing his life to the work of the Lord. On July 15, 1977 Melvin was united in Holy matrimony to Delores Meeks. Melvin worked for the C & I M railroad before retiring in 1998, he then worked as a cook at the Home Town Buffet, and most recently Melvin worked for Shaw's catering.
Melvin leaves to cherish his memories, his beautiful caring wife, Delores Rawls. Children: Shawn Rawls Bond and Melvin Rawls Jr. of Decatur; Troy Rawls of Sacramento CA; and Todd Cruz. Brothers: B.J. Marie Rawls; Joe Annette Rawls; Vernon Clara Rawls and Jerry Cole all of Decatur. Larry Currie of Atlanta GA. and Wilbert Cole of Macomb. Sisters: Georgia Evans of Atlanta GA. and Sue Carol Currie of Peoria. Sister in law, Elizabeth Rawls of Decatur. Eight grandchildren; Uncles and Aunts: George Rawls Jr. of Trenton TN; Wilbert Mary Rawls, Thomas Amanda Rawls, Zannie Toni Rawls, and Ruby Winters all of Decatur; Edna Anthony of St. Louis. Stepmother, Mrs. Lucy Rawls; stepsisters: Alice Moore and Bernice Rudd all of Mt. Vernon. Stepbrother, J.C. Ligon of Detroit, MI. Sisters in law: Christie Orville Owens; Shirley William Tyus; Dorothy Isaac Edward; Ruthie Roosevelt Singleton; Evon Robinson; Elease Meeks and Ada Owens; brothers in law: Rudolph Jerdean Meeks; Percy Janett Meeks and Earl L. Meeks. A host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by his father, mother, one brother, grandparents, and one grandson.
The family would like to thank Dr. Duncan, the Dr.'s and staff at Cancer Care Specialists, and Jasper Street Church of Christ for all of their loving care and concern.
