Michael Wayne Wigginton's Obituary
Michael Wayne Wigginton, 62, of Decatur, Illinois, passed away on March 27, 2026, in his home.
Michael was born on April 7, 1963, in Burlington, Iowa, to Sonny and Betty Wigginton. He proudly served four years in the United States Air Force as a firefighter before returning to civilian life. Michael then dedicated 31 years of service to the Decatur Fire Department, retiring after a distinguished career that included 11 years as a firefighter and 21 years as an Inspector. He also faithfully served his community as a Leading Knight for Elks Lodge #401.
Michael was known above all as a devoted husband to his wife, Vickie Wigginton. Married on April 6, 1996, they shared nearly 30 years of love, partnership, and family. He was a proud dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa, as well as a loyal and true friend. Michael greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and was an avid pool player who also loved fishing and getting in a round of golf whenever he could.
Throughout his career with the Decatur Fire Department, Michael made a lasting impact on the community, particularly through his dedication to fire safety education in local schools and his service at Station 1. His passion for helping others and his commitment to protecting the community were evident in everything he did.
Michael was a kind, caring soul who would do anything for anyone. He knew no strangers and treated everyone with warmth and respect. What he loved most was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Michael was a big kid at heart, and his joy for life was contagious. As life brings people in and out of our paths, some make an impact and some do not, Michael has made a lasting impact on everyone he met. His smile could light up a room, and while he will be deeply missed, his family and friends will forever cherish the memories made along the way.
Michael is survived by his wife, Vickie Wigginton; sons, Wayne (Ashleigh) Wigginton, Weston (Terri) Wigginton, Donald (Mandi) Wilson, Chris Wilson, and Brandon Wilson; 22 grandchildren and 9 greatgrandchildren; siblings, Rich (Patty) Wigginton, Donna (Troy) Banks, Le Ann (Joel) Dickenson, and Leslie (Brian) Walsh; brothers-in-law, Jeff (Brenda) Wilson and Gregg Wilson; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sonny and Betty Wigginton; his son, Andy Wilson; grandson, Nicholas Wilson; brothers-in-law, Mike Wilson and Brian Wilson; and sister-in-law Debbie Wigginton.
Visitation for Michael Wigginton will be held from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. At 2:00 pm, Fire Department Honors will be rendered, memories will be shared, and Veteran’s Honors will conclude the informal ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Michael’s honor to Elks Lodge #401, designated for the Kids’ Christmas Fund, through the Elks 401 Facebook page.
