Oscar Lerner's Obituary
Oscar Lerner, 82, of Sunny Hills Florida, formerly of Decatur, died Saturday, May 23, 2008 in Northwest Florida Community Hospital, Chipley, FL.
Oscar was born October 16, 1925, in Chicago, the son of Solomon and Minnie Muskovitz Lerner. He was a Foreman/Welder for Allis-Chalmers Co. Oscar served his country in the U.S. Marines serving in the Asiatic Pacific Area including Iwo Jima. He attended boot camp at Camp Pendleton before going to Hawaii and Paris Island. He attained the rank of Corporal in the Fourth Marine Division, Baker Company, Fourth Motor Transport attached to the 24th Regiment. Oscar was a self proclaimed “Beach Bum”. He was a dog lover who liked to bowl and camp. He was a volunteer Guardian Ad Litem for the State of Florida and a substitute teacher at Chipley High School. Oscar married Mary Jean Messersmith Welker on July 18, 1964; she preceded him in death on September 17, 1990.
He is survived by his son, Sheldon Lerner of Sunny Hills, FL;
step-son, Douglas Welker of Decatur; step-daughter, Donna Welker Feriozzi of Decatur; grandsons: James Welker of Lovington, Michael Laskowski of Chipley, FL, and Vincent Feriozzi of Decatur; granddaughters: Jennifer Hyde Worley Smith of Chipley, FL, and Kathryn Feriozzi of Decatur; step-grandson, Zachary Hyde of Orlando, FL; step-granddaughter, Sarah Hyde Neel of Pensacola, FL, and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, Daniel Welker, one daughter, Dianna Welker Laskowski Hyde one brother and one sister.
Graveside service with Military Rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard will be 2 pm Friday, May 30, 2008 in Keller Cemetery, Lovington. There will be no visitation.
The family would like to thank Barbara Harvey, neighbor for her gentle care and concern shown to Oscar.
