Pauline Hays' Obituary
C. Pauline Hays, 93, of Decatur, passed away Monday, February 22, 2016, at Vonderlieth Living Center in Mt. Pulaski.
Pauline was born April 17, 1922, in Hickory Point Township in Macon County, IL, the daughter of Gerhardt Herman and Elizabeth (Hines) Rakers. Pauline married Fred U. Hays on June 6, 1942. Together, they owned and operated the Oreana Garage many years. Pauline enjoyed crocheting infant hats and afghans for several charitable organizations in Decatur. She enjoyed playing the organ for her family and the residents of the Oxford House where she resided for 20 years. She was known for her apple pies, cinnamon rolls, homemade waffles and pizzas. She enjoyed attending mass at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Decatur.
Pauline is preceded in death by her husband of almost 60 years, Fred.
She is survived by her five children, Fred P. (Peg) Hays of Lenoir City, TN; Diane Rettke of Charlotte, NC; Linda Browning of West Chester, PA; Doug (Cindy) Hays of Louisville, KY; and Tim (Karen) Hays of Oreana, IL. She has 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
She is also preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters, and one son-in-law. She is survived by two brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Pauline’s life will be 11 am Thursday, February 25, 2016, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the church service. Burial will be in Boiling Springs Cemetery. Memorials in memory of Pauline may be made to the donor’s choice.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Vonderlieth Living Center for the excellent care they provided during Pauline’s brief stay.
