Richard Louis Swearingum's Obituary
Decatur – Richard Louis Swearingum, 81, of Decatur, passed away Friday, January 12, 2018, in Fair Havens Christian Home.
Richard was born August 29, 1936, in Detroit, MI, the son of James Seth and Anna (Stanton) Swearingum. A U.S Army veteran of the Korean War, Richard went to Michigan Barber College. He worked as a barber at Joe’s Barber Shop in Detroit before owning the business later in his career. Richard also became a licensed cosmetologist and had the opportunity to cut/style the hair of many Motown artists during his career. He loved to fish, listen to jazz music and bar-b-que. Richard married Maggie Payne and she preceded him in death June 6, 2013 after more than 50 years of marriage.
Surviving are his step-sons: Derrick (Caroline) Payne of Decatur, Elton Payne and Tony Payne of Detroit, MI; sister, Laura Swearingum of Detroit, MI; brother William Hollinsworth of Detroit, MI; 12 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Tunyell Swearingum; son, Quinton Swearingum; five sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services to celebrate his life will be 11 am, Thursday, January 18, 2018, at Riverside Baptist Church; visitation will be one hour before the service in the church. Burial will take place in Camp Butler National Cemetery.
