Robert Dale Carter's Obituary
Robert Dale “Smokey” Carter, 70, of Decatur, Illinois, passed away June 27, 2024, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Robert was born in Decatur on January 30, 1954, the son of Robert and Helen (Matlock) Carter. He married Carol Eversole on June 19, 1981, in Decatur. They shared 32 years together as soul mates until her death in 2013.
Robert served honorably in the United States Air Force near the end of the Vietnam era. After returning home, he worked as a roofer for 35 years. At different times, he held several other jobs, including maintenance and handyman. He attended Tabernacle Baptist Church with his family as a child, and as an adult, he was an active member of Prairieland ABATE and the NRA. His favorite activity was to sit by the fire (the origin of his nickname “Smokey”) with a cold beer and listen to all kinds of music. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
