Robert James Delaney's Obituary
Robert James Delaney, 92, of Decatur, passed away Friday, August 4, 2017, in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Bob was born October 15, 1924, in Springfield, IL, the son of Frank and Agnes (Beiser) Delaney. He married his wife, Jean V. Dunham, on July 15, 1950. Together they raised six children. She preceded him in death May 12, 1990.
Bob was raised as a devoted Catholic and graduated from Cathedral Boys’ high school, Springfield, IL, Class of 1942. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot during World War II. He first worked at the Pillsbury flour plant in Springfield. He then hired on Illinois Bell Telephone and retired in 1982. Bob was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Telephone Pioneers, Knights of Columbus #2120, and IBEW Local 146 member.
Bob leaves behind his children Michael F. Delaney (Mary) of Decatur, Linda J. Delaney (Michael Williams) of Decatur, Larry M. Delaney (Laurel) of Aurora, IL, Terry P. Delaney (Carmen) of Fargo, ND, and Kelly G. Delaney (Elena) of Decatur, 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and brother James Delaney of Jacksonville, IL.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers Lawrence and Bernard, daughter Paula Jo Michael, and granddaughter Ryanne Delaney.
Mass of Christian burial to celebrate Bob’s life will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 2160 N. Edward St., Decatur, with Rev. Richard Weltin celebrant. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Monday, August 7, 2017, at Moran & Goebel Funeral home with a vigil prayer service at 5:30 PM. Burial with military honors will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church or St. Teresa High School.
