Robert Lowell Wells' Obituary
Robert Lowell Bob Wells, 86, of Quincy, formerly of Decatur passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the Illinois Veterans Home.
Bob was born on March 30, 1925 in Adams, IL, the son of Jesse Arthur and Myrtle Belle Wells. He married Dolores Mae Bartelt on June 13, 1950, in Elgin, IL. She preceded him in death December, 1954. Bob married Ira Bea Nuchols December, 1955. She passed away February 18, 1988.
Surviving are his children Mrs. Sue Roger Yarnell of Bethany, IL; Dr. Michael Lisa Wells of Aiken, SC; Mrs. Becky Bruce Teter of Crystal Beach, FL; and Mrs. Chris Larry Livergood of Decatur, IL. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren: Brian Amy Blair, Hilary Blair, Michael Teter, Ben Yarnell, Erin Ben Yarnell Booker, Michael Kim Wells of Matteson, IL, and 5 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his mother, father, brother, sister, and step-daughter, Candace Gilmore.
Bob graduated from Seymour High School, Payson, in 1942 at the age of 17. After working on some farms, he enlisted in the Army in 1948 and was assigned to the Marbo Signal Command serving in Guam. After a time in the reserves, he was recalled to active duty in October, 1950, and served as a message clerk in the IX Corp Artillery Headquarters in Korea. He was honorably discharged in September of 1952.
As a young man, Bob enjoyed hunting with his father and son. He loved to dance and sing. He did some pleasure boating with his children. Bob was an avid reader especially of westerns. He had a great sense of humor and a love of unusual words. Most of his working life revolved around the automobile industry.
He enjoyed the last 6 ½ years of his life in the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy. He spread his humor among many residents, worked for the library, and served as a pall bearer a number of times. Bob loved his family with all his heart. He was a thoughtful, fun-loving man who will be greatly missed.
There will be a private memorial service with interment at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, IL. Memorial contributions can be made to the Illinois Veterans Home, memo: Elmore Home-Like Project, 1707 N. 12th St., Quincy, IL 62301.
