Ronald Earnest Sloan's Obituary
Ronald Earnest Sloan, 83, of Decatur, passed away Monday, November 3, 2025.
Ron was born on February 22, 1942, to Roy Ralph Sloan and Helen Elizabeth (Gamble) Sloan. After graduating from Shelbyville High School in 1960, Ron entered the United States Army, proudly serving his country from 1960 to 1963. Upon returning home, he enrolled at Sparks Business College in Shelbyville while working at the Oliver Corporation.
During his time at Sparks College, Ron met his first wife, Karren Sue Halford. They were married on July 24,1965, and together they had two sons, Shane and Darren Sloan. Following college, Ron began a long and dedicated career at the Firestone Corporation, where he worked from 1965 until his retirement in 2001 after 36 years of service. On August 10, 1993, Ron married his second wife, Deborah A. (Cowell) Sloan.
Ron was an active and respected member of his community. He served as President of Prairieland ABATE, President of the Izaak Walton League of America, and Founder and President of Freedom by Choice ABATE. He was involved in Decatur pool leagues, serving as captain of numerous teams. He also served as a Senior Vice Commander of the Macon County Honor Guard.
Ron was passionate about motorcycling and camaraderie. He guided numerous trips to Sturgis, South Dakota, and led countless fundraising rides for various causes. His leadership, generosity, and dedication earned him the respect and friendship of many in the motorcycle community.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah A. (Cowell) Sloan, and parents Helen Elizabeth (Gamble) Sloan and Roy Ralph Sloan.
Ron is survived by his sons, Shane Sloan (wife) Kendra Sloan, Darren Sloan (wife) Donna Sloan, Brother Bill Sloan (wife) Shirley Sloan, Sister Sharon Dial (Husband) John Dial, Sister LuAnne Stone (Husband) Bob Stone, and many grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and another great-grandchild expected next month.
Ron will be remembered for his service, leadership, and love of family, friends, and the open road. His life was a reflection of loyalty, kindness, and adventure.
Visitation will be from 2 pm to 4 pm Friday, November 14, 2025, at the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. The visitation will conclude with military rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard.
