Sammie Woodland's Obituary
Sammie Woodland 70, of Decatur, passed away on Sunday April 3, 2016, in his own home with family at his side.
Services to celebrate Sammie’s life will be 12:00 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2016 at the Jasper Street Church of Christ, 950 N Jasper St, Decatur, IL 62521. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Memorials are suggested to the Jasper Street Church of Christ.
Sammie was born on April 26, 1945 in Covington, TN, the son of Willie Tipton and Mary Murray. He graduated from Frazier High School in 1964. He joined the United States Air Force where he made rank of Sergeant and served three and a half years. He was wed in holy matrimony in 1969 to Alyne Butler. They were wed for over twenty years and to this Union, three children were born: Darrell Butler, Carla Woodland, and LaToya Grandberry. He worked as a Furnace Operator at Wagner for over thirty years. Sammie enjoyed watching sports, traveling, gardening, going to concerts, and mostly loved spending time with his family.
Cherishing his memories are his children, Darrell Butler of Decatur, Carla Woodland of Memphis, TN, LaToya Grandberry of Memphis, TN, Tamika Tatum of Bloomington, IL; loving partner of twenty-two years Maurice Washington of Decatur; brothers, James (Norma) Woodland, Walter Woodland. Hollice Woodland, Robert (Betty) Woodland all of Decatur, Jessie Alston-Millington, TN, Roy (June) Tipton Memphis, TN and Wayne (Lori) Tipton of Nevada, MO, Nathaniel Tipton of Memphis, TN; sisters, Sylvia Tyus of Dyersburg, TN, Pearlene (Willie) Larrue of Covington, TN, Mary Hill, Rosie Whitehead both of Decatur, Yvonne Irons, of Bolivar ,TN, Evelyn McLemore of Covington, TN; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Mary Woodland, Willie and Estella Tipton; brothers, Gerome W. Woodland, Willie Alston; sisters, Susie and Elaine Woodland, Joe Tipton, and Bobby Ray Tipton.
