Decatur- Samuel E. Murphy, 79, of Decatur, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Visitation for Samuel will be 5-7 pm Friday, October 3, 2014 at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. Services to Celebrate Samuel’s life will be 1pm Monday, October 6, 2014 at McKiney-Brown Funeral Home in Liberty, KY. Visitation will be 11am-1pm at McKiney-Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be in Jones Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Special Olympics of Macon County.
Samuel was born January 25, 1935 in Elkhorn, KY, the son of Otha Coy and Claudia Hazel (Bottoms ) Murphy. He was previously employed with Caterpillar as a security officer, with over twenty-nine years of service, in Decatur, IL. Samuel served as Chief of Police for the village of Buffalo, for seventeen years, retiring in 1988. He also volunteered with Buffalo Fire Department and served on the village of Buffalo township board. He was a member of the Pine Grove Church in Elkhorn, KY, and enjoyed fishing, shopping, wood working, and spending time with his family. He married Lona Faye Long on December 20, 1951in Liberty, KY. Decatur. They shared over sixty-three years together.
He leaves behind his wife Lona Faye Murphy of Decatur; mother Claudia Murphy of Mannsville, KY; son Jerry Murphy of Decatur; daughter Julie Murphy of Decatur; brothers Roy D. Murphy of Beach Grove, IN, William K. (Cathy) Murphy of Elkhorn, KY, Dale (Debbie) Murphy of Indianapolis, IN; sister Janis Murphy of Indianapolis, aunts Lucille (Homer) Whited of New Whiteland, IN, Margaret Anderson of Louisville, KY, uncle Jimmy (Donna) Bottoms of Horton, KS, and a host of nieces and nephews, and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Otha Coy Murphy, son Edward Lee Murphy, brothers Carlton Murphy, and Eugene Murphy.
