Having been a member of ISAGS for the past few years, I was privileged to know Steve on the golf course at a few ISAGS tournaments. I am sure the members will miss his presence. My wife and I send our condolences to the Family and friends Paget, – Other – Bermuda
Steve's enthusiasm and joy for life and his love for family, friends, Notre Dame, and the Navy will always be cherished. We appreciated his interest in the history of the Gunning/Solon family. He was the "glue" that held the whole clan together. We enjoyed hearing about his service as a World War II U.S. Navy airplane pilot. He stimulated our interest in golf and was an inspiration, especially after his not-so-long-ago hole in one! Our thoughts and prayers are for Steve and his family. Steve, first cousin to my mother, Ann, and her siblings John, James, Ellen and Mary Solon through their mother, Abigail Gunning Solon, was greatly loved and admired by me and my sisters, Mary Ellen Fleischli, Virginia Wendland and Frances Frost and our families. Our many get-togethers with Steve are cherished memories, full of wit and humor. Steve led such a purposeful and zestful life. Steve Kevin's 2nd cousin is another example of "The Greatest Generation". He fought for our freedom flying the carrier-based Corsair fighter in WWII. His license plate until death was "THOOKER", a tribute to his memory of that service. He proudly wore his tailhook emblem on his suit lapel at all times. Also 2nd cousin of Steve We are so sorry to see Steve go. He helped create some of the greatest childhood Christmas memories that anyone could ever treasure. He gave us our first color television set – hence, "the peacock"! He surprised my mother Joan Kennedy, his first cousin with a trip to Hawaii to visit her oldest daughter, Kathy & family, at the funeral of her Mother, Catherine Gunning Stewart after Joan had cared for her for years. It was something she never would have done for herself, but was a God-send at the time. He was always full of surprises and had a great sense of humor. He took wonderful care of his niece, Nancy Graliker von Grondel, throughout her life. He was such an asset to Decatur, he lived a long and prosperous life and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by so many people. St. Louis, MO US
