T. Dennis Layton's Obituary
T. Dennis Layton, 79, of Decatur, passed away peacefully Friday, August 28, 2020, at Villa Clara Nursing Facility.
Dennis was born May 1, 1941, in Shelbyville, IL to James Alvin and Harriet Emma (Bodell) Layton. He married Mary Katherine Blush on April 8, 1961, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, IL. She passed away February 13, 2008. He was a member of Our Lady of Lords Catholic Church. Dennis was a switchman for the Norfolk & Southern Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 2002. In 2011, he worked as a courier for the Cancer Care Center of Decatur, a job that he thoroughly loved and enjoyed. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Notre Dame Football. Dennis was a passionate handball and racquet ball player taking place in a Decatur city tournament. He enjoyed landscaping and he loved his pets.
He is survived by his two children, Denise (Marty) Bushell of Decatur and Steve (Lori) Layton of Henderson, Nevada; his two grandsons, Matthew Bushell of Champaign and Michael Bushell of Decatur; one great-grandson, Kaden Blivens; two brothers, Mark Layton and Tony (Sue) Layton all of Decatur; and two sisters, Theresa (Alan) Kahler of Marion and Christine Layton of Decatur.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary; his son, Michael Dennis Layton; two brothers, Joe and Phil Layton; and two sisters, Sara Riley and Patty Sederwall.
Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate the life of Dennis Layton will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 4, 2020, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. before the service at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Decatur. Memorials may be directed to The Oasis 243 W Cerro Gordo St, Decatur, IL 62522.
