Virgil L. Reed's Obituary
Virgil Lester Reed, Jr., 78, of Decatur, passed away Thursday afternoon, October 6, 2016, at Decatur Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side.
Virgil was born January 23, 1938, in Decatur, to Virgil Lester Reed and Dorothy Louise (Hughes) Reed Robb. He married Linda Lee Nesler on June 25, 1961, in Decatur. He was a Captain and Company Commander of the Quartermaster Battalion in Rockford, IL in the Army Reserves. He graduated from the University of Illinois. Virgil was employed at Black & Company for 42 years in industrial sales.
He was a member of Orville Dunham Antique Gun Club and American Legion. He loved gun restoration, model boats, his gardening and above all he loved his family.
He is survived by his wife of 55years, Linda; two children, Paul (Susan) Reed of St. Louis, MO and Laura (Rodney) Reedy of Paducah, KY; four grandchildren, Timothy Morthland, Jessica Reedy, Katy Reed and Austin Reed; two son-in-laws, Mike Van Tyle of Oaklawn, IL and Tony Morthland of Leroy, IL; step-sister, Penny (Steve) Huber of Decatur; special cousin, Kathy Thornton of Decatur; special friends, Gene (Tickie) Wooters and Bill (Jackie) Sumner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Paula Kay Van Tyle and one grandson, Andrew Reed.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Kenneth Scribner and the Decatur Memorial Hospital staff.
Memorial services to celebrate the life of Virgil Reed will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2016, at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
