Walter Moore's Obituary
Walter Moore Sr., 73, of Decatur left his earthly home at Decatur Rehabilitation & Health Care Center to join the Lord in Heaven on Wednesday, October 9, 2013.
Walter was born on July 16, 1940 in Tunica, MS the son of Lamb and Lizzie (Dorsey) Moore. He loved music and had genuine talent as he taught himself to play the guitar, piano, and several other instruments. In the 1950’s he and his brother moved to Chicago, IL, relocating their parents and eight younger siblings soon after. That is where he formed the Walter Moore Blues Band and played with some of Chicago’s finest Blues musicians. He also owned his own business and had seven children of his own. Due to failing health, he came to Decatur in 1998 to be closer to his oldest son’s family and resided at Decatur Health Care for the past several years. He was a “favorite” at the Health Center, especially when he played the piano and sang with the nurses.
He is survived by five sons and their families, Walter and Shari Moore Jr. of Decatur; grandsons, Walter of Dubai, UAE; Dustin and Jordan Moore, both of Decatur; Derrick Moore of Atlanta, GA, his daughters Erika of Chicago, and Shannon of Florida; Dennis Moore of Chicago; Patrick, Mitzi, and Patrick Jr. of Chicago; and Chris, Michelle, Christopher and Michaela Moore of Wisconsin; two daughters and their families, Dorothy Williams of Memphis, TN, and Latricia Moore of Chicago. He is also survived by brothers, Willie, John, and Lamb Jr. Moore all of Chicago; sisters, Ora Berkhalter of Houston, TX; Dorothy Adams and Rosie May Jacox both of Chicago; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Decatur Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, Walter’s many hospice nurses throughout the years, and Catholic Charities for the wonderful care given to him.
Graveside service to celebrate Walter’s life will be 11:30 AM Thursday, October 17, 2013 in Fairlawn Cemetery with Rev. William Pruett officiating. Visitation will be 10-11 AM Thursday in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home.
