William E. Camfield's Obituary
William E. "Bill" Camfield, commonly known as "Chief", 89, of Decatur, dropped his final "Checkered Flag" on Tuesday April 18, 2006 in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be 12 pm Saturday April 22, 2006 in the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home where visitation will be held from 10 am until the time of services, Pastor Joe Camfield officiating. Burial will be in Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta. Memorials to: Bill Camfield Memorial Race, 132 W. Hampshire, Maroa, IL. 61756. Moran & Goebel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Bill came into the world on February 24, 1917, in Fairfield, IL, the son of Ernest and Minnie Mae Headlee Camfield. He was an entrepreneur who worked hard and owned several businesses throughout his life. He began at Houdial Hershey and from there went to work at the War Plant in Illiopolis, where he met and eventually married his wife Bernita. Bill owned several service stations in Decatur as well as Camfield's CafÃ?© and Pool Hall in Argenta and Dash Disposal here in Decatur for many years. His greatest passion was racing. He raced for a short time and then focused on building race cars. He had several drivers who drove his cars throughout the mid-west including two of his sons, Jerry and David. He was a member of several racing clubs throughout his life and was the President of the Shahanne Web Racing Association and Macon County Landfill for several years. Bill married Bernita G. Miller on December 8, 1946 in Hollywood, CA. and she preceded him in death on May 21, 2003.
Surviving are his children; Dennis Brenda Crowder of Argenta; Jerry Sandy Camfield of Decatur; Dave Rhonda Camfield of Maroa; Pastor Joe Carol Camfield of Chapperall, NM; Terry Shelly Camfield of Oreana and Patricia Steve Jones of Maroa; twenty-five grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Delles and sister, Tressie McGill.
