William Roy Lawyer's Obituary
William R. Lawyer, 81 of Decatur died Saturday, April 30, 2016 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.
Bill was born November 25, 1934 in Cerro Gordo, the son of Samuel H. and Sarah Jeanette (Hickman) Lawyer. He worked for over 41 years at Mueller Co. in Decatur before retiring in 1999. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.
The world’s biggest St. Louis Cardinals fan, Bill worked hard his entire life and did an outstanding job of meeting his duties as a husband, father, grandfather, member of the Roman Catholic Church, and any other role he was assigned. He was a Member of Knights of Columbus Council 577 and a patron of the Decatur Symphony Orchestra Guild. An avid reader and learner, Bill was a great storyteller, loved to laugh and meet new people, and enjoyed fishing, country music, biscuits and gravy, and supporting his children’s artistic and athletic interests. Among other activities, he was a Boy Scout leader for Troup 18, and helped coach his children’s grade school basketball and little league teams. Bill could fix anything and passed along his skills, sense of humor and practical values to his grateful family.
He is survived by his wife Rita (Yunker) of Decatur, daughter Colleen M. Yundt of Bloomington, sons Lawrence W. and Christopher H. Lawyer of Minneapolis, Minnesota, son Andrew P. Lawyer of San Francisco, California, and grandchildren Eva (Yundt) Parenti, Hayden and Emma Lawyer. He is also survived by a sister, Sandra Stonebreaker of Ocean Park, Washington.
His parents and sisters Eleanor Lawyer, Ruth Storey and Phyllis Fritz preceded him in death.
Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2016 at Holy Family Catholic Church, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Point Pleasant Cemetery. Memorials should be directed to the American Heart Association.
