William Pendleton Shade, II's Obituary
William Pendleton Shade, II, 88, died at 2:00 am, August 15, 2006 in Decatur Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 130 West Eldorado, on Saturday, August 26, 2006, at 2:30 pm. There will be no visitation. Private inurnment services at Fairlawn Cemetery will be held at a later date. Moran & Goebel Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St John’s Episcopal Church or donor’s choice.
Mr. Shade was born May 28, 1918, in Decatur, IL to Lewis William Shade and Florence Tucker Shade. He attended St. John’s Military Academy, Delafield, Wisconsin his last two years of high school and graduated from the Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. During college he was president of Sigma Chi fraternity, a member of Sphinx honorary society and business manager of Mask & Wig. Following graduation in 1940, he began his insurance career at Bennett & Shade Company, Decatur, which his father had founded with John Bennett in 1906. He served for 3 years in the Army Air Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of captain, and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He returned to Bennett & Shade Company after the war, retiring in 1987 after 47 years.
On December 22, 1945, Mr. Shade married Barbara Morey of Decatur, IL. They were blessed with four children: William Pendleton Shade, III, married to Susan Hoppe; Thomas Michael Shade, married to Jane Bush; Sarah Milligan Peterson, whose first husband, Craig Milligan, died in 2000 married to Dirk Peterson; Jeffrey Lewis Shade, married to Molly Sills, all of whom reside in Decatur. Ten grandchildren are William Pendleton Shade, IV Dawn, Tucker Robert Shade Courtney, Parker Hoppe Shade, Jonathan Thomas Shade, Jason Michael Shade, Christopher Robert Shade, Todd Devlin Milligan, Courtney Barbara Milligan, Wesley Prescott Shade, and Lauren Elizabeth Shade. He leaves one great grandson, William Pendleton Shade V, and one great granddaughter, Halle Renee Shade.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Virginia Lamb Hauge and Jeanette Hays, and brother, Robert Shade.
He leaves his brother and sister-in-law Walter and Dorothy Morey, sister-in-law, Eve Shade, and many nieces and nephews.
His involvement in the community included President of Rotary Club, President of the YMCA Board of Directors, the Vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, President of the United Funds Board of Directors, and Chairman of the annual fund drive in 1960. He was a member of the Decatur Club and Country Club of Decatur where he served on the board of directors.
He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for outstanding community service in 1950. In 1954 he was chairman of the Community Clinics at the Decatur and Macon County Hospital. He was a member of the board of directors of Macon County Chapter of American Red Cross and St. Mary’s Advisory Board.
Mr. Shade was one of the twenty-nine organizers of the Soy Capital Bank and served as a director for 34 years.
In 1971 he was named Chairman of the Millikin University Associates and in 1990 was a recipient of the James Millikin Award.
His hobbies included woodworking, traveling with his wife and family, and golf. His church and family treasure many pieces of furniture he made.
His family extends its sincere appreciation for the wonderful care provided by the DMH Continuing Care staff during the past 10 months.
