William Jerry Thornton's Obituary
William G. "Jerry" Thornton, 83, of Decatur died on Thursday April 28, 2011, in his home with his family close by.
Jerry was born on October 25, 1927 in Decatur the son of Jesse and Minnie Bone Thornton. He married Patsy Lee Jenkins on December 8, 1947 in Decatur. The enjoyed 61 years of marriage before she passed away on July 26, 2009.
Jerry was a Veteran of the US Army, who served during the occupation of Japan. He retired from PPG Industries. He was an avid fisherman for many years, and also enjoyed camping trips to Lake Shelbyville, gardening, music and bingo. He loved softball and baseball and was a loyal Cubs fan. He was a loving and devoted family man, and he will be deeply missed.
Jerry is survived by his son, Dennis D. Thornton and daughter, Julie husband, David Bundy of Decatur; grandchildren: Jenny husband, Jim Pecoraro, Tyler Bundy, Kallie Bundy, Ryan Thornton and Drew Thornton; great grandson, Easton Pecoraro; brother, Robert; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Richard and Kenneth, and sister, Betty.
The family would like to thank those who provided special care and compassion during the last months of his life, including Dr. Dennis Costerisan, Dr. Leroy Hall, DMH Hospice, and the staff at McKinley Court.
Graveside services with burial to follow will be 11 am, Wednesday, May 4, 2011, in Mt. Gilead Cemetery with Chaplain Cathryn Pyle officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
