William Louis Wagner, MD's Obituary
Dr. William L. Wagner, 80, died January 19th at Arbor Glenn fortified by the Sacrament of Holy Mother Church. Dr. Wagner was born March 18, 1931 in Chicago IL, the son of William Louis and Anna “Pryczynski” Wagner. His youth was spent in Florence, SC and Decatur, IL. He graduated from St. Teresa High School as valedictorian of the Class of 1949. He completed his undergraduate and medical school studies at St. Louis University. After serving in the United States Navy, he returned to St. Louis to serve a Residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology at St. Johns Mercy Hospital. While he was a Resident, he met and married the love of his life, Gertrude Anne Hammond in 1963. They moved to Decatur, IL where he established his medical practice. Through the years he served as Chief of Obstetrics at St. Mary’s Hospital, and President of the Macon County Medical Society. He was a Member of the American College of Surgeons as well as the DuBourg Society of St. Louis University. He considered himself very fortunate to have chosen a profession which gave him a sense of purpose and fulfillment. The delivery of Siamese twins and two sets of triplets were among the highlights of his 33 years of practice. Bill was an avid golfer, card player, jazz enthusiast and life-long Cubs fan. He loved his Wednesday game and gin rummy with “the Bandits” at the Country Club of Decatur. Bill is survived by Gert, his loving wife of 48 years; son, William L. Wagner, III of St. Louis, MO; daughter, Kathleen Anne Wagner of Austin, TX; son, Joseph Hammond Wagner of Raleigh, NC. Visitation will be held at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home on Friday, June 1, from 5:30 to 8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with burial immediately following at North Fork Cemetery. Friends and family are then invited to a luncheon at the Country Club of Decatur from noon to 2 pm.
