William L. Wells' Obituary
William L. “Bill” Wells, 87, died 2:35 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Graveside military service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, in Graceland Cemetery with the Rev. Wray Offermann officiating and military rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. There will be no visitation. Moran & Goebel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Bill was born Sept. 17, 1923 in Xenia, son of Millard and Lydia Bonham Wells. He served as a military police officer during World War II in the European Theater in the Army Air Corps and honorably discharged in 1945. He served mostly in England and in France and lost part of the sight in one eye as a result of his service.
He married Violet Allphin on Nov. 9, 1946 in Clay County.
He was retired from the United States Postal Service and had previously worked for the Wabash Railroad. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 99, the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion, the Eagles Lodge No. 507 and the Loyal Order of the Moose. He had been a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and later Concordia Lutheran Church. He was an active volunteer at both churches and served in several capacities, wherever he was needed. At home, Bill was a much-loved husband, father and friend. He could fix almost anything. He built a garage at the family home without any training in carpentry, built cabinets and furniture for his wife and family, could take a car apart and put it back together again, and was willing to give almost any project a try. He spent most of his adult years working two jobs to provide for his family and still found time to be available to them any time, always with a cool head and calm presence. He made friends everywhere he went and never knew a stranger, and that included animals. Dogs and cats flocked to him.
He is survived by his wife, Violet; his son, Lester; his daughter, Valerie and her husband, Bill Wilson, all of Decatur; and his nephew, Keith Johnson, wife, Pam and daughter, Ryann of Red Oak, Texas.
The family of William L. “Bill” Wells is being served by Moran & Goebel Funeral Home and Cremation Center honored provider of Veterans Funeral Care, 2801 N. Monroe Street, Decatur, IL.
