Its with a heavy hart that I write this, Mr.Tyus will forever hold a special place in my heart. As a former student of his, I remember he jokingly referred to us as "his disciples" as he liked to call the group of students that gravitated to him. Although in high school I was on the fast track to becoming a criminal, and was even expelled from Dorsey for illegal sales. Mr.Tyus showed that there were other paths in life available to us besides the ones we saw in our environment. Only after I received my diploma did the life lessons he taught us sink in, he taught me the importance of education. Thanks to the efforts of Mr.Tyus I was the first of my family to attend and graduate college and I continue to enjoy the occasional college course. Through my example and encouragement my nieces and nephews have also started attending college. The lives that this great man touched will keep growing the legacy he created. Still I can't believe that we lost a great person, remembering his love of Diana Ross, El Salvador, and his "London Fog" trench coat bring a smile to my face. I can't express enough the loss that I'm feeling at this moment, but as big of a doer as he was he would want us to continue doing. Mr.Tyus thank you, and I will see you in Heaven, may the lord keep you close to him.
