Donald E. Schwalbe's Obituary
Donald E. Schwalbe, 82, of Decatur, died Wednesday, October 31, 2007, in St. Mary's Hospital.
Donald was born July 2, 1925, in Decatur, the son of Frederick and Mary Schwartz Schwalbe. A WWII Army veteran, Donald was a retired teacher who taught for most of his career at Eisenhower High School in Decatur. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where he previously sang in the choir and volunteered to make books and bibles for the visually impaired, a member of the National Education Association and Illinois Education Association, and past treasurer of the Retired Teachers Association. Donald married Edith L. Fortner on December 28, 1947, and she preceded him in death on June 12, 2006
Surviving are his children: Pamela husband, Daniel Ditzler of Hampshire, Rick wife, Cheryl Schwalbe of Decatur, and Barry wife, Stephanie Schwalbe of Springfield; grandchildren: Derrick and Darian Ditzler, Melissa Ryan, Wendy Cravens, Julie Guither, Brian and Kirk Pound; thirteen great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Leona Schwalbe of Bloomington; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers.
Visitation will be 10 to 11:30 am, Monday, November 5, 2007, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with funeral services at 11:30 am. Internment will be in Point Pleasant Cemetery. Memorials: Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.
