Edd Jackson's Obituary
Decatur – Rev. Edd Jackson, 83, of Decatur, passed away Thursday, November 23, 2017 in his brother’s home with his family by his side.
Rev. Jackson was born September 15, 1934 in Perthshire, Mississippi, the first child and oldest son of three children born to Lewis and Mary (Butler) Jackson. He lived in Perthshire during his early years. He accepted Christ as his personal savior and was baptized in 1947 at the Antioch M. B. Church in Perthshire under the leadership of Rev. M.B. Chaney. He later moved to Mt. Bayou, Mississippi, where he attended Mt. Bayou High School. In July of 1954 he moved to Decatur, Illinois and united with the New Salem M. B. Church. Later led by the Holy Spirit he joined the Northside M. B. Church where he served as Deacon, Trustee, Usher, Director of Baptist Training, and Superintendent of Sunday School. He also received several certificates from the District and State Convention.
Rev. Jackson met Lorraine Rosemary Mitchum in 1961 in Decatur and was united in Holy Matrimony on December 14, 1962. She preceded him in death on February 15, 2013.
Rev. Jackson was employed between Chamber Barrel & Quilting and Wagner Casting Company for forty-four years, gaining the status of Research and Product Development Senior Technician, Technical Director and Experimental Molding. He retired in 1998. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and baseball.
In 1967 he accepted the call into the ministry and was licensed to preach by Rev. R. L. Washington at Northside M. B. Church. He was then called to be the pastor of the St. John M. B. Church in Terre Haute, Indiana in May of 1969 and was immediately ordained under Rev. Washington’s leadership. He served there for three years and later returned to the Northside M. B. Church where he served as Youth Pastor under the leadership of Rev. Marshall Hughes. He attended the United Theological Seminary Decatur Extension from 1971-1974. In 1975 he was called to be the Pastor of Macedonia M. B. Church in Champaign where he served for twenty-two years. With the vision and grace of God he led the members into a newly constructed building from groundbreaking to dedication service. He resigned from the church in December on 1997. After resigning he returned to Decatur and joined Ebenezer M. B. Church where he remained for a short stay. He moved on to reunite with New Salem M. B. Church where he served as Associate Minister under Rev. Tyrone Oldham. In December of 2001 he was elected Interim Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church and by the grace of God was elected Pastor on January 25, 2003.
He leaves behind to cherish fond memories his daughter, Carla Jackson; brother, Lewis (Shirley) Jackson; grandchildren: Tiffany Hill-Taliaferro, Brittany Jackson-Killion, and Aalaya Stanback; great-grandchildren: Justin, Joshalyn, and Jortaye Gabriel Taliaferro; nieces: Edith Harris and Mary Dotson; nephew, Lewis Jackson III; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was reunited in Heaven with his parents, wife, daughter Sharon Hill-Simlin, and son Richard Hill-Jackson, and sister Elnora Jackson.
Homegoing services to celebrate Rev. Jackson’s life will be 11:00 AM December 1, 2017 in New Salem Baptist Church, 352 W. Wood St, Decatur, with Rev. John T. Banks officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow at Macon County Memorial Park.
