Gerald Dowd's Obituary
Gerald G. Dowd, 94, of Decatur passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Gerald was born September 15, 1918 in Oconee, IL to George P Dowd and Bessie (Ohl) Dowd. He attended school in Moweaqua, IL. He married Emily R. Tozer on June 30, 1938. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII, special services 4th Division as a tank mechanic. He worked for A.D. Day Chevrolet, Snyder Ford, Hilivety Welding and 40 years at CBQ Foundry-Wagner Castings Co. He was department supervisor and maintenance supervisor for 25 years. He retired in December of 1980. He was past president of local 741 and past chairman of CBQ Credit Union. He belonged to American Legion Post 105, VFW Post 99, and the NRA. He loved to hunt and fish and help others. Gerald was a very dedicated man.
He is survived by one son, George R (Earleen) Dowd, two granddaughters, Jodie (Joe) McKinney of West Plains, MO; Carman Rosson of Mt. Home, AR; two great grandsons, Daniel McKinney of Pomona, MO; Jordan Boothe of Mt. Home, AR; two great granddaughters, Courtney (Bill) Zastrow of Bakersfield, MO; Korrie McKinney of Jamestown, TN; great-great grandchildren, Abby, Colten, and Will Zastrow of Bakersfield, MO; brother Frank W. (Ann) of Mattoon, IL; two sisters, Margie Withers of Maroa, IL; Sue Ann (David) Scronce of Weldon, IL; several nieces, nephews, cousins and very special friends and neighbors.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Emily; son, Gerald Dowd; brother, Eugene Dawson; three sisters: Evelyn Frances, Tommy Lou Dash and Laura Orem.
Services to celebrate Gerald's life will be 10 AM Friday, March 22, 2013 at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Moweaqua. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Four Square Church of Decatur or the Moweaqua Coal Mine Museum. His dad was killed in that mine explosion on Christmas Eve 1932 with 53 other miners
