Helen Marie Sebok's Obituary
Helen Marie Sebok, 87, of Decatur, Illinois, passed away March 15, 2025, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
Helen was born in Fayetteville, Ohio, on April 30, 1937, the daughter of Eugene and Josephine (Stephens) Carlier. She married William David Sebok on June 2, 1956, in Decatur. He preceded her in death on November 16, 2004.
Helen spent her life caring selflessly for others. She had a 22-year career as a radiology transcriptionist at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur. She cared for her mother as she grew older, and she cared for her husband throughout their 49-year married life, including for 25 years following a life-changing motorcycle accident. She was a faith-filled woman who gave generously of her time and talent to her beloved parish, St. James (later Ss. James and Patrick Parish). On any given day, she could be found cleaning the church, helping with funeral luncheons, making masks for the young schoolchildren during COVID, quilting blankets for loved ones and school fundraisers, and, most importantly, praying with her parish community at Mass. Her parish was truly her home away from home.
Helen is survived by her son William “Billy” Sebok of Delavan, IL; daughters Jody (Doug) Neibuhr of Decatur, and Cynthia “Cyndi” Kostenski of Decatur; brother Eugene N. (Noelle) Carlier of Arizona; sister Dorothy Furstenberg of Colorado; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and sons David Sebok and Donald Sebok.
Funeral Mass for Helen will be held at 11am on Friday, March 21, at St. James Church in Decatur. Visitation will precede the Mass, beginning at 10am in the church. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Decatur will follow the Mass. Memorials may be directed to Ss. James and Patrick Parish. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.moranandgoebel.com.
