I'm only just seeing this obituary. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I didn't know Mark very long. I lived three houses down on Benton for two years and used to walk my dog several times a day. More often than not, Mark was outside tending to his garden, handing me tomatoes over the fence, asking me how my day was, fending off his dogs who would get very excited by mine, etc. The last time I saw him I told him I was getting ready to move out of Decatur. He told me he was counting the days until he would retire -- he was so looking forward to it. But he said, "I'm not really retiring, actually, just working for myself, I guess. I think I'm gonna like that boss!" Though I didn't know him well or long, he left a lasting impression on me. He had a big voice, a big personality, and a big heart. I think he told me he had a daughter with the same name as mine, and from there on we were neighborhood friends. Home seemed to be his happy place. I never encountered him in a bad mood or not wanting to share his time or an anecdote with me. I'm so sad that his life was cut short, but I know that he lived with his whole heart and I'm positive his family knew how much he loved them. Peace be with you all during this painful time. You're in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for sharing your "tomato-loving neighborhood friend" with me.
