Dear Family,
My sincere sympathy for the loss of your mother, Pat Slifer. When I first came to Decatur in 1981, I sang in the choir with her at St. Patrick Church. She was a busy lady; she worked part-time as a cashier at an A&P grocery store on North Main St.
She also visited patients in St. Mary’s Hospital. and would give them a small cross she had crocheted for their prayer books. It was so nice to see a familiar face when I was working as an RN there. I knew she was a volunteer tax preparer so I would ask her to just “eyeball” my info so I would have an idea what we would have to pay. She was always very close.
When I was working on the history of St. Patrick Parish before the merger with St. James she shared many memories and photos. Her mother used to wash and press the altar cloths. Her children went to Mass with her and sat in the choir loft in the back row with Irv. Davis. She also invited the choir for a cook-out at her house on far West Main Street in the Fall. Such a pleasant evening.
Another act of kindness was mending the crocheted doily that I always used for my morning coffee. She told me I should frame it because it was nearly 50 years old was becoming past mending.
She lived her Christian Faith.
Pat,Jim, Kate, and I are keeping your family in our thoughts and prayers. May the fond memories of your mom help you through this difficult time.
