Richard Lee Blundy's Obituary
Decatur-Richard Lee 'Dick' Blundy, 78, of Decatur, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer in St. Mary's Hospital with his family by his side.
Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Dick's life will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2012 in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 3850 Lourdes Dr. Decatur, with Father Rick Weltin Celebrant. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial with military honors will be in Boiling Springs Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church or the American Heart Association.
Dick was born October 15, 1934 in Granite City, the son of Clarence and Lola (Hasty) Blundy. He attended Forrest Strawn Wing Schools. He played football and basketball where he was a fantastic point guard in the late 40's and 50's. He had played and lost to Harv Schmidt former Kankakee and University of Illinois basketball coach in sectionals. He had been recruited by Gay Kintner at Stephen Decatur but missed Forrest so much he left Decatur to return to Forrest. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He retired from Caterpillar with forty years of service. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He was an avid Cardinal and Cowboys fan and IHSA basketball official for many years. He married Sanda Lee Kirchhoff in 1957. He then married Carolyn (Sheehan) Townsend June 5, 1982.
He leaves behind his wife Carolyn of Decatur, son Barry Blundy of Tennessee, grandchildren Cassidy Blundy of St. Louis, Missouri, Rihana Blundy of Decatur, and Kolton Richard Blundy of Tennessee, great-grandson Logan Blundy of Decatur, half brother Bob Dowdy and wife Debbie of Pontiac, sister-in-law Carol Blundy of Danville, step-sons Brian Townsend of Beavercreek, Ohio and Brad Townsend of Carlisle, Ohio, five step-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Kenneth Blundy, sister Carmen McClellan, and son Rickey Lee 'Rick' Blundy.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the nurses and staff at St. Mary's Hospital and Fair Havens Christian Home.
