Russell E. Leonard's Obituary
Russell E. Leonard, 82, of Decatur, Illinois, passed away Friday, April 18, 2008 in his home, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial celebrating his life will be held at 10:00 am Monday, April 21, 2008 in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Rev. Rick Weltin as Celebrant. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm Sunday in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home with a Vigil Prayer Service at 4:30 pm. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery Illiopolis with military rights conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to Macon Resources or Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Russ was born October 25, 1925 in Buffalo, Illinois, to J. Curtis and Rose Delaney Leonard. He was raised in Niantic, one of six children. He married Gloria Fitzgerald on January 22, 1955. He was a farmer in the Bearsdale area for 45 years. The Korean War veteran served in the U.S. Army and received the Bronze Star. He was a charter member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Russ was a basketball and baseball youth coach for many years. He was devoted to his family, friends and the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved sports and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate.
Russ is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Gloria; daughters Karen Gipson and husband Tom of Decatur, Laurie Pakula and husband Gary of Forsyth; and son Bill Leonard and wife Susan of Rowlett, Texas; grandchildren Matt, Molly, and Amanda Leonard; Matt, Nate, and Scott Gipson; and Claire and Grace Pakula. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
The family would like to thank Dr. Wade and the staff at Cancer Care Specialists for their compassionate care.
Russ was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and was adored by his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
