Scott Busboom's Obituary
Robert Scott Busboom, 62, of Foley, Alabama, formerly of Decatur, Illinois, passed away on February 26, 2025. Scott was born on November 3, 1962, to Wayne and Patricia Busboom in Champaign, Illinois. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle , nephew, and friend, whose life touched many.
A graduate of Urbana High School, Scott furthered his education at Parkland College before embarking on a diverse and impactful career. Over the years, Scott worked in farming, retail sales and management, and radio broadcasting. His passion for broadcasting led him to a long and fulfilling career with the Cromwell Radio Group, where he co-hosted Busboom and Wolfe weekday mornings with Doug Wolfe. Although he cherished his role as a radio personality, his true love was sports broadcasting. A highlight in his career came when he followed the Millikin women’s basketball team to a national championship. He broadcasted over 1,200 games throughout his career, including high school and college sports, and his voice became synonymous with Decatur Public School District #61, where he brought the excitement of local athletics to life.
Scott’s dedication to sports broadcasting was unmatched. Whether it was football, basketball, or baseball, Scott's enthusiasm and professionalism made every game feel important. He understood that beyond the scoreboard, every athlete was someone’s child, grandchild, or loved one. His genuine care for the players and teams made him a beloved figure in the community. His passion for the job and his commitment to the athletes were evident in each broadcast, and his legacy in local sports will never be forgotten.
Scott’s contributions to local sports were recognized when he was inducted into the Illinois High School Hall of Fame for Broadcasting, a testament to the profound impact he had on the community.
After his retirement from broadcasting, Scott lived out his dream of moving to Foley, Alabama, where he and his wife, Paula, enjoyed the warmth of the Gulf Coast. The move allowed Scott to embrace a more relaxed pace of life, but he never lost his love for sports or his deep connection to the Decatur community. He cherished his time with family and friends, often sharing stories of his broadcasting days and the joy he found in his career.
A faithful member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Decatur, Illinois, Scott's faith was an essential part of his life. He also enjoyed playing golf and Nascar.
Scott married Paula Nicol on December 13, 1986, and together they raised a loving family. Scott is survived by his wife, Paula; his daughter, Abby (Shawn) Guenther of Foley, Alabama; grandson, Peyton; granddaughter, Makenna; sister, Shari (Dave) Lendy of Saint Charles, Illinois; nephew, Jack; as well as an aunt and cousin in Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, support, tributes, and stories from the community during this time. They are truly humbled by the memories shared.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Scott’s name to the Northeast Community Fund or Toys for Tots Macon County, two causes that were close to Scott's heart.
Scott will be remembered for his love of family, his dedication to his community, and the passion he brought to everything he did. His legacy will live on in the thousands of games he broadcasted and the lives he touched along the way. His voice will echo in the hearts of those who had the privilege to listen.
