Verna L. "Babe" Layton's Obituary
Verna L. “Babe” Layton, 83 of Decatur, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Verna was born September 19, 1925, in Springfield, IL, the daughter of Vernon and Emilee Black Duke. She was a homemaker and member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Verna loved to play bridge and for many years she worked as a volunteer at Catholic Charities and Salvation Army. She married Robert F. Layton August 16, 1947 and he preceded her in death April 6, 1996.
Surviving are her sons: Robert wife, Becky Layton, Jr, of Girard, William wife, Loretta Layton of Argenta, Paul wife, Lynette Layton of Lumberton, TX, and Michael Layton of Oreana; daughter, Barbara husband, Larry Hastings of Maroa; brothers: Robert wife, Margie Duke and Paul wife, Nancy Duke of Springfield; sister, Roberta Skaggs of Springfield; twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm Sunday, March 8, 2009 at the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home; vigil prayer service at 1:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 am, Monday, March 9, 2009 in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Rev. James Palakudy celebrant. Interment will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery. Memorials: St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Salvation Army.
