Evelyn Colleen Curtis
Birth Date: October 5, 1925
Death Date: February 26, 2018
Evelyn Colleen Curtis passed away February 26, 2018 at Hickory Point Christian Village in Forsyth, IL and rejoined her beloved husband Norman in the care of our Almighty God.
Colleen was born Evelyn Colleen Bloomer in St. Louis, Missouri on October 5, 1925 to James Henry Bloomer and Pauline Thompson Bloomer. During Colleen’s childhood the family relocated to a farm in Festus, Mo. Colleen graduated from Festus High School where she met her sweetheart Norman Charles Curtis. When Norman went off to World War II with the U.S. Marines in 1943, Colleen went to work to support the war effort. When Norman returned home from the war in 1945, they were married and started a family in Festus. After several years they were transferred with Norman’s job with PPG to Cumberland, Maryland where they spent 9 years before returning to the Midwest in 1965 to Decatur as the result of another PPG transfer.
Anyone who has known Colleen knows that she never met a stranger during her 92+ years on this earth. Her warm and cheery manner and that little laugh that accompanied almost every sentence made her such fun to be around and she gathered many friends in the PPG family as well as the Quilt Guild and the Historical Society where she spent many hours supporting the efforts of those groups. Colleen was also a hard worker and spent countless hours sewing, quilting, restoring furniture, replacing caned chair seats, and supporting the South Shores United Methodist Church. In more recent years, Colleen was a member of the Elwin United Methodist Church.
She is survived by Norm Jr.’s wife Joann Lewis Curtis of Decatur, son Jim Curtis and his wife Beth of Boiling Springs, SC, daughter Candace Curtis of Assumption, and son Brian Curtis and partner Karen Mesnard of Chesapeake, VA. Colleen also has 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Colleen was preceded in death by her husband Norman and her eldest son, Norman Curtis Jr. of Decatur.
We want to send a special thank you to the staff of Wing 100B at Hickory Point Christian Village for the care and compassion they provided during Colleen’s time there. We have another thank you to special friend Kathy who befriended Colleen at HPCV and they became quite close in a short time.
A memorial service to celebrate Colleen’s life is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3rd at Elwin United Methodist Church 1260 W. Elwin Road. This will be preceded by a 10 a.m. visitation. Burial will be at Macon County Memorial Park in Harristown. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to God’s Shelter of Love in Decatur.
